Don
Simón Díaz and Don Gabriel García Márquez
I remember and I
do a direct quote from the Belgian writer in her book Memoirs of Hadrian
"Maguerite Yourcenar, that once found in a letter of Flaubert, this
unforgettable phrase: «The gods were gone, and Christ was not yet , since
Cicero and Marcus Aurelius was one time when man was alone»" ...
On February 19th
this year 2014, I felt a great sadness in my heart , when contemplating
starting a figure lifted Latin American music : The Venezuelan Don Simón Díaz ,
( affectionately called by Venezuelan Uncle Simon ) , what really hurt me (even
more than his physical absence) it is not giving the farewell she deserved, due
a political crisis in Venezuela , which seems to have space only for itself,
and insists drown all other scenarios of creativity and cultural expressions in this country.
Who would have
thought that the typical music of the plains regions in the lyrics of "
Caballo Viejo " could ascend to Olympus of universality , giving us shows
the versatility and beauty of this rhythm until then cataloged local.
I return to the
idea , remembering , as you I did it in two preceding paragraphs , when on April
18th, I find the death of Don Gabriel García Márquez, a Colombian
writer and famous Spanish writer, who is consecrated through his masterpiece “One
Hundred Years of Solitude”, so inevitably let out a sigh of regret upon hearing
the news.
Quote’s
Marguerite writer came unconsciously, and an eerie feeling came to my mind when
I ask: Are we the latins it being alone?, that was the impact that caused to me,
to fall into that were two universal men who leave us, the same year, which
were representatives of the twentieth century, and so far this tour in the XXI century,
in my humble opinion, I sense a cultural decline in Hispanic America.
What happens to
us Hispanic people?, We remain mired in a deep sleep , we are not able to
overcome hunger , misery and poverty , even being in the region with more
natural resources in the world. I don’t think that the aforementioned problems
have not existed before, but fall into an empty period, comparable only to the
time when “The gods were gone, and Christ was not yet” , if not encourage the
media to flourish manifestations of culture in all its splendor.
